In 2011, VF received an order for a WAM-300 Waste Assay Monitor for the Public Limited Company for Radioactive Waste Management in Hungary. At the beginning of 2012, the production of the system was successfully completed and in the second quarter of 2012, the whole system was delivered to the site of the installation.
WAM-300 is a complete measuring system used for the characterisation of radioactive waste stored in 200-litre drums. It uses a segmented gamma spectrometry technique for activity determination in the individual drum segments. The key components of the delivered WAM-300 waste assay monitor are:

  • The detection part with a spectrometric HPGe detector with a cooling and adjustable collimator;
  • A collimated MDG-13S dose rate meter used for fast-scanning of the drum;
  • An MDG-02e dose rate monitor for background dose rate measurement;
  • A drum loading and unloading system;
  • A turntable with scales and a lifting mechanism;
  • A transmission source, Eu-152, in a shielding container;
  • Control and power supply switchboards that allow local manual control of the system;
  • A remote control and display PC with the application software and database;
  • A basic calibration kit (custom-designed phantom with reference source).

Complete services were provided as part of the project: basic technical design, detailed design, production, factory testing, supply, on-site installation, site testing and commissioning and personnel training.
The equipment was approved by competent Hungarian authorities. Complete documentation was ensured in Hungarian. The software was customised and translated into Hungarian as well.
